About Guwahati and Tourist Attractions

Guwahati, known as Pragjyotishpura (Astrology City of East) in ancient times, derives its name from Assamese words “Guwa”, the areca nut, and “Haat”, the market. According to an ancient legend, the demon king “Narakasura” is said to have built this city. The city has unique scenic beauty due to its hilly and plain terrains, wide range of flora and fauna, and the mighty Brahmaputra bisecting the city into two halves. The city is well connected by air, rail and road to the rest of the country.
Visitors can explore the iconic Kamakhya Temple, one of India’s most revered Shakti Peethas, and the serene Umananda Temple located on a river island. The Assam State Museum, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, and Guwahati Planetarium showcase the region’s art, culture, and science. The bustling Brahmaputra Riverfront and Guwahati Ropeway offer breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape.
Nearby attractions make the journey even more enriching. Just a few hours away lies Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for the one-horned rhinoceros, and Shillong, the “Scotland of the East,” famous for its waterfalls, caves, and music culture. Nature lovers can also visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Sualkuchi, the silk village of Assam.
